Gowalia Tank Jain Temple Mumbai 2

Jains are people who follow Jainism, a religious sect/group in India (there’s a small global following also) whose main belief is ‘non-violence’. Their respect for life – people, animal, insect – is 100%. They, literally, wouldn’t hurt a fly. Jains are vegetarians – and I’ve heard that they even pray for the life of the plant/vegetable before cooking or eating it.

I know very little about this religion, and so, what I say/write in this blog may be inaccurate. However, as far as I know, apart from a few stories, the ‘elephant’ motif or symbolism may not have a large focus in Jainism. Yet, the ‘elephant’  is featured on the walls of the Gowalia Tank Jain Temple – many in series and in attractive colours (some in glass cases).
