P. Madhavan Biography

P. Madhavan was a national award winning film maker of Tamil cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. He produced and directed many successful Tamil films during this period. He established film production house, Arun Prasad Movies and produced 39 films under the banner. He also directed 49 films during his film career. Two of his production cum directorial ventures have won national award for best regional film in Tamil - Raman Ethanai Ramanadi in 1970 and Pattikada Pattanama in 1972. Same year his mega hit film - Gnana Oli earned him Filmfare Award for Best Director – Tamil. Agni Paarvai released in 1992 was his last film. He passed away in 1992. He was the first chairman and MD of the M.G.R Film City and the State Film Development Corporation.

 

He has also directed a few Hindi films - Aansoo Aur Muskan in 1970, Dil Ka Raja in 1972 and Ram Tere Kitne Naam in 1985. Though he owns a successful career in south Indian film industry, his Bollywood journey was unsuccessful. Yet his directorial debut, Aansoo Aur Muskan is known for the memorable comic track sung by Kishore Kumar - "Guni Jano Bhakt Jano".

 

Born in 1928, he started his film career as an assistant director and worked under different directors - T. R. Ragunath, followed by C. V. Sridhar. With Mani Osai in 1963, he turned a full-fledged director. Before that he worked as assistant director and associate director in the industry. Later he directed many successful films such as Dheiva Thaai, Vietnam Veedu, Thanga Pathakkam, Kanne Pappa, and Kuzhanthaikaga. He died in 2003 at the age of 75 in Chennai.
