Baffled by the reviews

October 23, 2024I bought this on pre-order back in August but have only just got round to building it. I actually wasn’t looking forward to building it having read the reviews saying how difficult it was and that numerous people had resorted to glueing the pieces together to stop it falling apart. Now I have completed the build I am baffled as I had no problems whatsoever. I found the build straight forward and my boat is solid. I think Lego have absolutely nailed the faces of the 3 characters. I’m not sure about the sea base. I feel like it’s just random white pieces stuck on to look like waves but they don’t really. It’s a nice idea to have the two ways of displaying Bruce but I’m not sure it’s necessary. Mine will only be displayed with Bruce “coming out of the water” onto the boat as that is the iconic scene. The set is a little expensive for the number of pieces (the Home Alone house has triple the number of pieces for double the price). £89.99 would have been better but it is a collector’s item so it has been priced accordingly. It would have been really nice to have a buildable shark cage to put the characters into and a few more bits to play with like the Home Alone house comes with. Maybe Lego can create an additional accessory add on pack to go with it (working harpoon gun/bitten yellow lilo/meat chunks etc)?? Please. All in all it is a good set and I would recommend if you are a Jaws fan.
Flawed bow design

August 14, 2024I agree with a few other builders here that the bow design of this model is flawed.
This is a challenging model to build, and it is rated for 18+.
When completed - a very eye pleasing Lego set.
But the bow, did I mention the bow ?
In the instruction manual, from steps 79 to 88 you assemble a left and right inside bow assembly.
There is a 1x6 light blue plate that is then attached by a 1x2 light blue slope curve block.
In instruction 101, you are shown to connect a finished exterior bow assembly to the above interior assembly.
The interior assembly will collapse, again and again.
You will need to tear down the assembly to access and rebuild the light blue blocks.
Even if you manage to complete the mounting of the exterior hull design, it is just a matter of time and movement - and that blue plate assembly will fail.
After several beverages, I did the unimaginable, and I cut a 1x8 plate to a 1x7, to make a solid connection on the interior hull assembly.
In steps 79 and 84 in the instruction manual, I replaced the 1x6 plate with the custom 1x7 plate - and did not use the 1x2 curved slope.
And Bobs your uncle, solid construction and no failure in the interior hull design.
I am ashamed of myself, but the custom block was the only way to keep my sanity.
Otherwise a brilliant model.
Simply Awesome!

August 24, 2024I’ve waited for this set for quite awhile! Although not perfect it did not disappoint. I look at it complete and can’t help but remember certain lines spoken during the movie, even sometimes reciting them to myself! I really enjoyed the build; however, I’m curious as to why the sample submitted to Lego Ideas was not the one that was used for this set. Two things that could’ve been included in this set: One, two more cage pieces. Why only two with the set? Two more could’ve been included to make an even four. The little gray retainer piece could be moved further out to accommodate four cage pieces and the two air tanks could be moved right next to the exhaust pipe. This is what I did because I had two matching cage pieces from a previous Lego set. Two, the side fishing pole on the cage side of the boat. The way it’s positioned it’s impossible to open the window. No problem. A little “Lego fire extinguisher top handle piece” can be put in its place followed by a one-lock Lego piece connected to the gold colored fishing reel type piece. Boom. You can open the window and have the fishing pole sticking out a tad outside the boat that can go forward or backward. Issue solved. Maybe two small beds in the cabin would’ve been neat but other than the stuff I mentioned, I’m very satisfied with the Orca!
Needed a little more engineering

September 3, 2024I was excited to build this set, and it was going pretty well right up until I had to build the bow of the boat. I'm not sure what happened during the engineering process over at LEGO, but this thing is one of the most delicate and finicky sets I have ever built. Near the end of the bow process, a small piece that is attached near the beginning of that section in the instructions can come off with very minimal pressure applied when attaching the sides. This prompted me to take it apart and try again, thinking I didn't do it right. Unfortunately, it happened a second time even after taking more care to ensure everything was properly built. On my third try, I was able to VERY gently attach the sides without dislodging the smaller piece, however when I finally attached the bow to the rest of the ship, that piece came off again. Since it can't be seen and I am only displaying this, I can let it go. Overall, it's a neat set and cool for Jaws fans. I just wish the engineers had found a better way to make the bow section of the boat.
