PI is a non-invasive numerical technique derived from a pulse oximeter signal that reflects real-time changes in peripheral perfusion. It is calculated by the ratio of infrared light absorbed by the pulsating arterial flow (AC) against the non-pulsatile signals in blood and tissues (DC) and expressed as (AC × 100/DC%).
