SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,745, dated February 20, 1900.

To all whom it muy concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID JOY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hampstead, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive or Railway Engines, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable' those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
. This invention relates to steam-engines, and it has special relation to locomotive or other engines whichare designed to be used upon railways.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the steam. will be more economically employed in'locomotive or railway engines.
In carrying out my invention I provide a condenser in connection with the locomotive or railway engine whereby utilization of the steam, as in stationary or marine engines, is enabled; but as in locomotive-engines the steam-blast is necessary for maintaining the steam-pressure in the boiler my improvements comprise the use of a valve or valves having special ports and adapted to control the distribution of the steam and its exhaust from the cylinder. This valve mechanism may be arranged so that by means of :its special ports at the instant just previous to the ordinary exhaust it will pass a part of the steam to be exhausted up the chimney or smoke-stack to act as the steam-blast, after which the valve will close at both these special ports and open in the ordinary manner to the exhaust-port, which latter is arranged in direct communication with the condenser. I may arrange the condenser on or under the tender of the engine, or in tank-engines the condenser may occupy the space of the tank, and the condenser maybe of the usual form employed in stationary or marine engines, except that in my invention and improvements the outer case,into which the condensing-water is lled, may be dispensed with, and the air-currents caused by the momentum or travel of the locomotive or railway engine are employed for effecting condensation, or the outer condensercasing may be retained and left open at the front and rear ends, thus allowing the draft of air furnished, as above described, to circu;-
late about the condensing-surfaces.
In lieu ot a tubular form of condenser I may employ thin corrugated metallic sheets having plane edges, such sheets being adapted for connection in pairs at their plane edges, so that they conjointly form a corrugated body between the inner space of which the steam is admitted for condensation and on the outer surface of which the air-currents or draft are suitably directed and act.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is atransverse sectional view showing the cylinder andv smoke-box and valve mechanism of a locomotive-engine embodying my improvements, also the condenser with the front portion of the casing removed. Fig. lL is a detail sectional view illustrating a modified arrangement of the blast and vacuum pipe. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on the longitudinal plane of the engine and through one of the cylinders ot the mechanism illustrated in Fig. l, also showing the condenser with the front end showing portion of the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a front end view of a locomotive or railway engine,showing the arrangement of the condensers, the front end portion of the casing of the same being removed; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the front Vportion of a locomotive or railway engine,
showing the arrangement of the condensers.
The mechanism shown in Figs. l and 2 embodies the improved construction and arrangement according to my invention and improvements by which a part of the exhauststeam is passed to the blast-pipe to serve the usual function or purpose, and the remainder of the steam is retained to be treated for producing a vacuum by any of the well-known methods.
Referring to the drawings, C designates the cylinder, P P the ports, and V the valve. The cylinder and ports are of the usual construction, and the valve is also of usual con- IOO struction so far as the main distribution of steam is concerned. In my invention a balance-plate d is arranged above the valve, and the latter is provided with two small ports l) b, which communicate with similar ports or openings b' 1)/ in the balance-plate (l, from which latter extends the blast-pipe c. The relative construction and arrangement is such that the ports or openings b I) b b operate to alternately give connection from the ports P P to the blast-pipe e from alternate ends of the cylinder. After the establishment of each of these communications thc valve continuing to move the face of the balance-plate d will close the ports b b, and-the valve will open in the usual manner, as at V', to the exhaust-port E beneath the valve.
The exhaust-port E in my invention is enlarged or extended, as at E and E", to form avacuum-chamber and passes the remaining steam through a pipe G in Figs. l and 2 into any ordinary form or construction of condenser, as shown at G.
The tubular condenscrs G are suitably or conveniently arranged, as shown in the drawings, and the air-currents are forced by the momentum or travel of the engine into said condensers at their front ends for the purpose of effecting condensation. The front and rear ends of the outer casing of the eondenserare removed and the ends of the condenser thus left open and exposed to the circulating air, as shown in the drawings.
In the construction shown in Figs. l and 2 the passage E of the exhaust-port E is carried up, so thatit surrounds the orifice end e' of the blast-pipe c and extends beyond the blast-orifice en' of the latter, as shown at Em. The passage E thus opens out at the top by means of the annular space E", extending around the orifice end of the blast-pipe e, which forms an ejector for the small amount of steam left in the space E, so that a vacuum will be formed behind the returning side of the piston.
In lieu of the relative positions of the passage E and end e of the blast-pipe, as shown in Figs. l and 2, said positions may be reversed, so that the blast-pipe surrounds the top portion of the passage E, as shown in Fig. l, in which relative construction and arrangement the blast-steam will pass out through the annular space or orifice of the blast-pipe surrounding the top end of the passagej, while the ejected steam from the passage E" will pass out at the top end of said passage and at a central point with relation to the annular surrounding blast-orifice.
Within the vacuum-chamber exit formed by the top opening or orifice of the passage E, I arrange a blower or jet, as at 7c, of any suitable construction, which is put into operation when steam is shutoff from the engine to prevent any back draft from passing down the passage E".
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readilyunderstood by those skilled in the art to which it appcrtains.
Vhile I have shown the construction especially adapted for the carrying out of my invention, I do not limit myself to the precise details of such construction nor to the spe cie method of producing the vacuum by cooling or by ejection, as numerous manifest Variations and modifications may be resorted to in this connection. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In an improved engine of the class de scribed, the combination, with the blast-pipe, the cylinder, and an exhaust-port enlarged into a passage extending to and arranged with relation to the blast-orifice of the blast-pipe, of a double-acting Valve mechanism for separating the steam to be exhausted from the cylinder and passing the same respectively to the blast-pipe and exhaust-passage, said steam passed to said blast-pipe operating to produce a vacuum in said passage, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an improved engine of the class described, the combination, with the blast-pipe, the cylinder, and an exhaust-port enlarged into a passage extending to and arranged with relation to the blast-orifice of the blast-pipe, of a jet or blower provided at the exhaustorifice of the exhaustpassage, and a doubleacting valve operating to separate the steam to be exhausted from the cylinder and pass the same respectively through the blast-pipe and through the exhaust-passage, said exhaust mechanism operating to produce a vacuum, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an engine of the class described, the combination of the cylinder having the feed and exhaust ports, the blast-pipe, the valve having the special or supplementary ports b b, and a balance-plate arranged above said valve and having the ports or openings b' b', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In an improved engine of the class described, the balance-plate arranged above the valve and provided with ports or openings, the blast-pipe extending from said balanceplate, and a valve with through ports or passages adapted to register with the ports or openings in the balance-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In an improved engine of the class described, the combination, with the cylinder having the feed and exhaust ports, and the blast-pipe, of mechanism connected with the exhaust-port of the cylinder and operating to produce a vacuum, and a valve operating with respect to the feed and exhaust ports of the cylinder and having a supplementary or special port so arranged With relation to its ex- IIO said cylinder into two parts and to send one part into said chamber and the other part into said blast-pipe, substantially as shown and described. v
