WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
Application filed Augu st 29, 1912. Serial No. 717,730.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. Cool-IRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that type of wrenches shown in my Patents No. 597,762, dated January 25, 1898, and No. 885,322, dated April 21, 1908.
The present invention has for its object to simplify the structure of the wrench, and to render the same more durable, and cheaper to manufacture.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragment of the wrench, showing the improved structural details. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the handle of the wrench at the outer end of which is a fixed jaw 6, and a side extension 7 having an opening 8 in which is mounted a rocking block 9. The movable jaw 10 of the wrench has a threaded shank 11 which passes loosely through an opening in the side extension 7 intersecting the opening 8. The shank 11 also passes loosely through an opening in the block 9, and at one of its corners, said block has a knuckle 12 which seats in a recess 13 formed in the extension 7 at one corner of the opening 8. The knuckle is located behind the jaw 6 and forms the pivot on which the block 9 rocks.
The movable jaw 10 is adjustable toward and from the fixed jaw 6 by a non-traveling nut 1 1 which screws on the shank 11. The nut 1 1 is mounted in a transverse opening 15 in the block 9, whereby it is held in place and prevented from traveling on the shank 11, and by thus inclosing the nut 14. the wrench is given greater strength and durability.
Opposite the opening 8, the wrench handle 5 has a slot 16 which communicates with said opening. In this slot is mounted a cross-pin 17 around which is looped, as ini'lical'cd at 18, the intermediate portion of :1
[lat spring. One end 19 of this spring pro- F jects into the opening 8 and bears against the block 9, and the other end 20 of the spring bears against the front wall of the slot 16. This slot provides an outlet for obstructions, etc., and also makes the wrench handle lighter.
The fixed jaw G has lugs 21 around which is poured the metal forming the handle, the latter being thus cast on the jaw, whereby the jaw is rigidly connected to the handle, and a more durable and cheaper structure is produced.
The block 9 is provided at its opposite side portions and at the opposite sides of the opening 8 and the opposite sides of the nut 14L with portions 22 which are reduced in transverse thickness with relation to the end portions of said block, thereby providing ample finger-space in order that an operator may readily turn the nut 1 1. FurtliGlll'lOlC, the block 9 is provided at one side with a web 23 which extends from one reduced portion 22 of the block toward the pivot'knuckle 19. Then the block is swung in the opening 8 this web 23 is adapted to enter between the side Walls of the slot 16 and thus the block 9 is positively held against transverse movement when the wrench is applied to a nut or bolt and the block is swung against the tension of the spring 19 as above indicated.
I claim:
A wrench comprising a handle having an extension provided with an opening and having a slot which extends through the handle and enters said opening, a block l0- cated in said opening and pivotally connected with the handle, a jaw having a shank which passes through the extension and the block, a nut located in the opening of the block and engaging said shank, and a spring located in the slot and bearing against the block, the block having at its side a web adapted to be received between the side walls of the slot.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
