The Gandhi Peace Foundation in Chennai will start the ‘Gandhian Study Circle' at the National College in the city this year. The circle will include the first and second year students of undergraduate courses and will orient them towards Gandhian philosophy of non-violence, tolerance and compassion, observed S. Kulandaisamy, Secretary of the Foundation.

Dr. Kulandaisamy, who earlier addressed the students of the college at the ‘Freshers Day' meeting, said that the present-day youth were more bent upon carrying out selfless services for the cause of the community development.

But, what they lacked was a proper guidance and motivation.

The circle, he said, had already been started in a couple of colleges in Chennai and a school in Sunguvarchathiram near Sriperumbudur.

On the functioning of the circle, he said that to start with an ‘open-book-exam' would be conducted in which students, using books, would have to answer the questions on various incidents in the life of the Mahatma.

In addition to this, students should relate the corresponding incidents, if any, they had experienced in their personal life.

N. Baskaran, Head of Department of Philosophy of the college, said that there was a strong case for harnessing the youth power towards constructive activities. The circle would contribute its mite in achieving the goal to the extent possible. Earlier, Dr. Kulandaisamy addressed the students and explained the relevance of Gandhian philosophy for all countries and all times.
