Today, Bandai Namco Entertainment officially announced Code Vein, a third-person action role-playing game coming to consoles in 2018, giving us our first real look at the title.

As previously reported, Code Vein will put players in the role of a blood-sucking Revenant who, with the aid of an AI-controlled partner, will battle “vicious enemies and monstrous bosses” in an attempt to escape the region of Vein. As a Revenant, players can absorb the powers of their enemies via Blood Veils and use them to “increase their strength, weaken enemies, and utilize new weapon abilities with overpowered attacks.”

In an announcement, Bandai Namco played up the challenge of Code Vein, indicating that the game is for the combat-inclined. (Bandai Namco also teased the game with a “Prepare to Dine” tagline, seemingly in an attempt to grab the attention of Dark Souls fans.)

Here’s the narrative set up for Code Vein, from Bandai Namco:

In the not too distant future, a mysterious disaster has brought collapse to the world, as we know it. Towering skyscrapers, once symbols of prosperity, are now lifeless graves of humanity’s past pierced by the Thorns of Judgment. At the center of the destruction lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This final stronghold is where the remaining few fight to survive, blessed with Gifts of power in exchange for their memories and a thirst for blood. Give into the bloodlust fully and risk becoming one of the Lost, fiendish ghouls devoid of any remaining humanity.

The publishers said in a release that Code Vein is a Bandai Namco Studios project, though previous reports have specified that the developers behind the God Eater games are doing the heavy lifting.
