President Barack Obama may have joked about the Pentagon working on building an Iron Man suit, but here in India, it is already well on its way to turn into reality thanks to the efforts of one bright and imaginative engineering student from Kerala.

Vimal Govind Manikandan, a final year Mechanical Engineering student at Calicut University, has successfully built a fully functioning wearable Iron Man suit using exoskeleton technology. And contrary to comic book beliefs, you don't need to be a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist to own one.

Manikandan's prototype costs nothing more than $750 (a little more than Rs 50,000) to manufacture and he intends for his technology to be used in the defence industry. He was heavily inspired by various Hollywood action movies to build the Iron Man suit. Weighing roughly about a 100 kgs, Manikandan's suit not only walks, and flexes muscles, but also can lift up to 150 kgs without breaking a sweat.
