The news of fake currencies being circulated in India have been circulating all over the country, and the latest message that is making people anxious is a picture of two Rs 500 notes with a detailed message instructing how to recognise original notes from the counterfeit currency notes. The pictures of fake Rs 500 note shows the green strip in the currency note being extremely close to Gandhiji's face and the picture with its message has gone viral on social media. According to media reports, these fake currencies have been printed despite the Reserve Bank of India increasing the security measures while printing the new Rs 500 currency notes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the NDA government's demonetisation drive with the aim of putting an end to currency counterfeiting as well as bringing out the hidden black money in the Indian economy. However, news reports suggest that the counterfeit currency has increased in the recent times. A government report based on the data collected by Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), there have been 3.53 lakh instances of counterfeit currency detection, which is the highest in the last eight years. The report read, The number of counterfeit currency reports (CCRs) increased from a mere 8,580 in 2007-08 to 35,730 in 2008-09 and 3,53,837 in 2014-15." To back these reports, there have been various cases of people being arrested for printing fake currency. In addition to this, a news daily also confirmed the WhatsApp message and said that these notes are actually being circulated in various places. The WhatsApp picture that has gone viral clearly shows that the governor's signature in one note was far away from the green strip on the Rs 500 note while the other was a normal note that we use in our day to day life.

When the new Rs 500 notes were first launched, there were striking differences in the colour of the currency. However, such a glaring difference was not seen at the time. The new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes have had their share of controversies and rumours as the notes are known to leak colour. Earlier this year, the new Rs 2000 notes that were issued by 'Children Bank of India' had also made news, and these instances are proving that the issue of counterfeiting of currency is far from resolved in our country.
