Kolkata: BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari has given a petition to the Assembly Speaker for disqualification of TMC leader Mukul Roy, MLA from 83-Krishnanagar Uttar Assembly constituency. Adhikari had demanded Roy's resignation citing anti-defection law after the latter returned to the Trinamool Congress despite winning Assembly polls on a BJP ticket.

A massive war of words broke out between Adhikari and Roy after the latter returned to the TMC along with his son. It started with Adhikari demanding Roy's resignation within 48 hours. In response, Roy said that he would not step down from the post of MLA.

Todna-jodna a part of TMC's dirty politics: Suvendu

"Todna-Jodna is part of TMC's dirty politics. They have been doing this for the past 10 years and nobody opposed it. But it is being opposed now and action will be taken under the anti-defection law," Adhikari had alleged when he had approached the Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankhar against Roy.

"50 MLAs of Opposition including Suvendu Adhikari have handed over a memorandum to me, attracting my attention towards four points including anti-defection law and incidents of Tiljala and Chandan Nagar...Being the Constitutional head of the state, let me make it clear that anti-defection law is applicable in full force in Bengal. It is as much applicable here as in other parts of the country," Dhankhar had said in response to the letter by BJP MLAs.

It is learnt that the BJP is also willing to go to court against Roy. In the recently concluded Assembly polls in West Bengal, the TMC returned to power with a massive victory. The BJP finished a distant second with 77 seats.
