New Delhi: Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari recently informed that the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project will be complete by 2022. Speaking at the 60th Annual SIAM conference, Gadkari announced that the 1200km expressway could be deployed as early as 2022. In his address, the Union Minister assured that infrastructure will play a key role in bringing demand back to the industry.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, one of seven currently under construction, will help in decreasing logistic time and cost along the key manufacturing hubs in the country. Gadkari informed that the current rate of road building per day has averaged to 30 km a day, with the highest being 40 km per day of highways. He said that India has now the second largest road network in the world being fueled by the tremendous growth in construction of expressways and highways.

5 key things you need to know about the multi-crore Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Project:

  1. The foundation stone for the project was laid down by Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in 2019.
  2. The Expressway is conceived as a 1,320 km greenfield project with an estimated cost of around Rs 90,000 crore. While at present, it takes 24 hours to travel from Mumbai to Delhi via the National Highway 8, this new expressway is expected to cut short the travel time to just 13 hours.
  3. The overall development work of the Expressway will be completed in 51 packages. The expressway will pass through a slew of underdeveloped regions such as Mewat, Ratlam and Dahod. It will also pass through multiple states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
  4. It will be access-controlled Expressway and will provide reliable infrastructure and better safety. The project will include four multilevel interchanges along with elevated ramps or service roads. It will provide direct connectivity to Delhi IGI Airport’s T3 terminal via a 5 km-long shallow tunnel. It will also boast crossroad underpasses at crucial junctions as well as intelligent transportation system (ITS).
  5. The expressway will have eight lanes with a provision for its expansion to 12 lanes in order to meet future traffic growth. As per officials, 73 wayside amenities will come up along the expressway at every 50-km interval. These facilities will have restaurants, food courts, dormitories, convenience stores, fuel stations, toilets and helipads as well.

It is worth mentioning that Gadkari informed that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has surpassed its target for construction of National Highways in the country During April to August this year."Even the Highway development works worth Rs 31,000 crore. for 744 Kms was awarded by it between April & August despite the pandemic, which is the highest ever in the past 3 years. I congratulate officials of MoRTH and NHAI as well as contractors and workers", he said.
