The first of the off-shore wind projects in the State is set to be executed in Dhanushkodi by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The off-shore wind project would be implemented for testing purposes similar to the on-shore wind plant that was set up at Kayathar.

K. Balaraman Kannan, Director-General, National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), addressing a press conference held as part of the 4th International Trade Fair and conference to be held in New Delhi, said the off-shore project involved setting up two wind plants with a capacity of eight–mega watt (MW) each in Dhanushkodi at a cost of ₹350 crore.

The State, having studied to have a potential of 35 giga watt (GW), the off-shore wind plants which were supposed to have high capital cost, the achieving of high plant load factor (PLF) would help in the high tariff reaching the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE). The work on commissioning the off-shore wind plants – a model project – would begin shortly, he added.

The MNRE had also initiated the ‘Vayu Mitra’ project to provide skill techniques for setting up wind turbines and a target of 5,000 people had been mandated under the manpower skilling project.

Tulsi Tanti, Chairman, Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), said that several several wind plants were old and so a policy on repowering would open up a huge opportunity for ramping up energy generation by replacing old turbines.

Eske Bo Rosenberg, Head of Trade and Innovation, Trade Council of Denmark and Consulate General of Denmark, also spoke on the occasion.

The 4th International Trade Fair and Conference ‘Windergy’, organised by IWTMA, would be held in New Delhi from April 27 to 29.
