The test was conducted by the Bharat NCAP on all the Maruti Suzuki passenger cars sold here.

2018 Maruti Swift Review Test Drive
The new Maruti Swift was expected to pass the safety test and it did

Maruti Suzuki has a total of 15 passenger cars in its portfolio. All the cars have just undergone a crash test conducted by the Bharat NCAP which is also the most comprehensive ever. Of these 15, only 9 of them passed the test while others didn’t meet the norms.

The 9 Maruti cars that have passed the crash test are S-Cross, Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, Baleno, Dzire, Swift, Ignis and Celerio. These cars underwent future frontal, off-set-frontal, side impact and pedestrian crashes and passed them successfully.

As for the Maruti Eeco, Gypsy, Omni, Alto K10, Alto 800 and WagonR models, they didn’t really make it through the test. But Maruti has other plans for these cars. The company is already developing an updated model for the Alto K10 and Alto 800. The next generation Wagon R too is in the works. Maruti has ensured that all these models will be meeting the safety norms before the timeline ends. Even the Maruti Ciaz is due for a facelift along with the all-new Ertiga that will come to India very soon.

The question is about the future of the Maruti Suzuki Omni, Gypsy and Eeco models that didn’t pass the crash test. While Maruti claims that their new Jimny model is an advanced and modern replacement for the Gypsy, it is still unknown when it will make it to India. Chances of the Omni and Eeco models to be phased away are also low as they have high volume sales in India. Though Maruti will have to put in a considerable amount of effort to re-engineer these models, it will be the logical thing to do for the company.

If one takes into account that Maruti Suzuki has a state of the art testing facility in Rohtak, Haryana, a passing rate of 60 percent is an under-achievement. The car-maker even claims to conduct 35-40 crash tests with each of its model. With Government becoming stricter by the day to ensure that the cars plying on the Indian roads have a minimal level of safety, it is only time before we wouldn’t have to mention things such as ABS and airbags as ‘Safety Features’ as they will come as standard.

Maruti Omni Price
The Maruti Omni has been on sale in India for the longest time and it is only right for the company to give it a visual, mechanical and safety update
