A day after Centre revoked Article 370 to strip Jammu and Kashmir of its special status, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi finally broke his silence on the issue which seems to have divided his party.

Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet, "National integration isn't furthered by unilaterally tearing apart J&K, imprisoning elected representatives and violating our Constitution. This nation is made by its people, not plots of land. This abuse of executive power has grave implications for our national security."

In a major move that has changed the geography and face of Jammu and Kashmir, the Modi government had on Monday revoked provisions of Article 370 to take away Jammu and Kashmir's special status, and proposed the bifurcation of the state into two Union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday made the startling announcement in Rajya Sabha and proposed to bring the resolutions, triggering a hue and cry in the House as well as outside.

While several Congress leaders like former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and others launched a vehement protest against the Centre's move, a few Congress leaders like Jaiveer Shergill and Janardan Dwivedi went against the party's stand and supported Centre's decision.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP and chief whip Bhubaneshwar Kalita resigned from the membership of the House in protest against the party's stand on the Centre's decision.

"I was asked by the party to issue a whip but this is against the mood of the nation. The party as it is on its way towards destruction and I can't be a contributor to it," Kalita said in a letter.
