Punjab farmer dies by suicide after consuming poison at Singhu border protest site

A resident of Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab, Amarinder Singh was rushed to a hospital in Haryana's Sonepat after he consumed poison at Singhu border, the site of the ongoing farmers' agitation.

A 40-year-old farmer died by suicide at the Singhu border protest site on the outskirts of Delhi on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Amarinder Singh, a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab.

Singh reportedly consumed poison at the Singhu border. He was rushed to a hospital in Sonepat where he succumbed around 7.30 pm Saturday.

Haryana Police was informed about the incident about an hour before Amarinder Singh's demise. Officials have launched an investigation into the matter.

Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, have been camping at Delhi's borders for more than 30 days now demanding the repeal of the Centre's three new farm laws. As many as seven rounds of talks between farmers' unions and the central government have failed to end the deadlock.

Earlier this month, another farmer died by suicide at the Ghazipur border protest site. He was later identified as Kashmir Singh (75), a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district.

In December, Amarjit Singh, a lawyer from Jalalabad in Punjab's Fazilka district also died by suicide at the Tikri border protest site. Singh reportedly left behind a suicide note claiming that he was 'sacrificing' his life in support of the ongoing farmers' agitation.

Another 65-year-old farmer had attempted suicide at Singhu border on December 21 of last year by consuming a poisonous substance.

On December 20, Gurlabh Singh (22), a resident of Dayalpura Mirza village in Punjab's Bathinda died by suicide near the Delhi border. He was a part of the ongoing farmers' protest.

Baba Ram Singh, a preacher died by suicide in Haryana's Kundli not far from Singhu border. His supporters claimed the preacher made a 'sacrifice' for the farmers protesting against the farm laws.
