88 years ago, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt did something 'to make the deaf hear'
Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt bombed the Central Legislative Assembly on April 8, 1929.
"If the deaf are to hear, the sound has to be very loud," stated Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt at the trial for bombing the Delhi Central Legislative Assembly, 88 years ago, on April 8, 1929.
These two young Indian revolutionaries turned the deaf, aristocrat British ears towards a youth upheaval that changed the course of India's freedom movement. In 1929, in order to court arrest, Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw political handouts and smoke bombs at the Delhi Central Legislative Assembly.
The aim behind the bombing was not to cause harm but protest against the passing of two repressive bills, the Public Safety Bill and the Trade Dispute Bill. In accordance to the plan, Singh and Dutt were successful and stopping the Assembly meet and they also surrendered themselves to police. Singh later got death penalty while Dutt got life imprisonment. The courage of these two freedom fighters was one of the reasons for our nation's independence.

- Shaeed Bhagat Singh's grand mother called him Bhagwanwala (child of God) when he was born
- He had an impressive academic record and his theatre skills gained him much prominence in many other colleges as well
- He carried a small bottle that had the blood stained mud from the Jalianwala Bagh massacre
- He coined the term 'Inquilab Zindabad' (Long live revolution)
- He was only a teenager when he joined Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
Batukeshwar Dutt:
- While working for the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association in Kanpur, Dutt learned how to make bombs
- While serving the term, Dutt initiated a historic hunger strike along with Bhagat Singh to protest against the abusive treatment of Indian political prisoners, and eventually secured some rights for them
- Many years later, in an interview with Asaf Ali, who was defending Dutt while he was under trail, he said that Batukeshwar did not throw any bomb himself but he wanted to be with Bhagat Singh through thick and thin. This was why he also surrendered himself and took the blame of throwing one of the two bombs.
