Manchester United have asked about Leicester City defender Harry Maguire but believe the England international wants to join Premier League champions Manchester City if they can agree a fee.
Leicester are likely to demand a record fee for a defender for Maguire.
City ideally want two centre backs with Atletico Madrid keen on Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany taking over as Anderlecht manager.

Maguire, who has joined up with the England camp and is preparing to face Holland in Portugal, recently played down any speculation.
The 26-year-old is the first choice centre half for manager Gareth Southgate, and insisted his focus was purely on the Three Lions.
City are in the market for an elite level centre-back after Vincent Kompany's departure
Speaking this week during an England press conference Maguire played down speculation
'When I am away with England I don't think about anything to do with club football,' Maguire said from England's training camp at St George's Park,' said the Leicester to reporters this week.
'As soon as I wear the badge my only focus is on England. I am fully focused on the two games coming up.'
United are in the market for a central defender this summer, with Solskjaer looking to shake up an ageing back line at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have also been heavily linked with a move for Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt, though face stiff competition for the 19-year-old from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Solsjkaer does however appear to be on the brink of completing his first official United signing, with the arrival of starlet Daniel James from Swansea imminent.
The Wales international arrived in Manchester on Thursday for his medical at the club's Carrington base, and is set to be unveiled in the coming days.
