Billie Eilish barely looks recognizable in her new music video for "Xanny," released on December 5. Her oversized, psychedelic outfits are replaced with a soft, cream-colored turtleneck. The heavy metal rings she's barely seen without are nowhere to be found. The black hair with the slime-green roots? That's gone, too, in place of a light-brown color we've never seen on the 17-year-old singer. It's got to be the most stylistically conservative look she's ever appeared in, and that's, well, quite a change for someone with Eilish's tastes.
The video was directed by Eilish herself, and it also takes a hard left turn from her others. In "Bad Guy," she oozed blood. In "All the Good Girls Go to Hell," she limped down the street while sprouting massive, demonic wings. In "Bury a Friend," she walked on walls with blacked-out eyes. But in "Xanny," she's simply sitting still in an off-white room — that doesn't make the video any less disturbing, though. While the song plays on, anonymous hands twist lit cigarettes into her skin and leave visible burns. Eilish just endures in discomfort. Watch a clip below if you dare.

But back to her hair. Considering the drastic difference between the hair in this video and Eilish's mullet-like crop in real life, we can only assume that a wig is responsible for the drastic change. There's that, and the fact that it'd be wholly out of character for Eilish to pick a permanent hair color so... normal. Before the singer dyed her hair black and colored her roots that signature neon shade, she was known for other out-there hues like deep silver and every shade of blue imaginable. If Eilish has magically made this soft-brown color her new thing, it'd be shocking, to say the least. But that's truly Eilish's whole appeal: You truly never know what to expect.
