In Mamata’s Bengal, BJP members are killed just for being the members of BJP

Days after the BJP put up a brilliant performance at the panchayat elections in West Bengal, an 18-year old BJP youth wing member was found hanging to a tree at Supurdi village. The victim has been identified as Trilochan Mahato, a member of the BJP youth wing. A chilling note written in bengali was found at the spot of occurrence by the police stating “at the age of 18, you are doing BJP’s politics… today, you are dead”. Reportedly, the same message was scrawled on his t-shirt. 

The BJP district head Vidyasagar Chakraborty confirmed this tragic incident. He stated, “No one can be so dirty in politics like the TMC. We will fight this. Mahato was a BJP youth wing member and had actively worked during the panchayat polls”. BJP National President, Amit Shah has also come out hitting hard at the TMC for this dastardly act. He expressed great grief about how a young and promising life was lost under state patronage. He also highlighted that Trilochan was hanged only because he happened to espouse an ideology that differed from the state sponsored goons. In a tweet that exposed the reality of the TMC government in West Bengal, Amit Shah opined that it has surpassed the violent legacy of the communist regime. Expressing solidarity, he made it clear that the BJP stands firmly with Trilochan’s family in this hour of grief.

TMC instead of apologising and reining its goons, instead it has sought to shift the blame on the BJP. Balarampur TMC MLA Shantiram Mahato alleged that there is a groupism in the BJP after the panchayat polls and out of insecurity the BJP is blaming the TMC. Without any evidence, the TMC has stated that Trilochan’s death was a result of an intra-party feud.

This is not for the first time that political violence in West Bengal under the patronage of Mamata led government has come to the fore. Ever since, the TMC came into power, its goons have openly resorted to violence as a tool for furthering political gains with impunity. The recent panchayat polls were an example of how the TMC use violence in order to retain political ground. Infact to ensure that the BJP does not make a dent in TMC’s vote share, the TMC goons tried to physically restrain the BJP candidates from filing nominations. Thereafter, during the elections, the entire electoral process was marred by violence and corrupt practices. This shows that the TMC is aware that  it cannot stay in power for long on the basis of its track record and therefore it is trying to retain West Bengal by the open use of muscle power.

It is outrageous how Mamata government is acting in blatant violation of democratic principles and the Constitution of India. While the TMC continues to use political violence in order to frighten its opponents and the voters of West Bengal, Mamata government stifles anyone who speaks up against its regime. Democracy has been killed in a merciless manner in West Bengal by the Mamata government. It is time some action is taken against the TMC government as the current state of affairs cannot be allowed to prevail any longer. The way electoral process in West Bengal is marred and manipulated, it is very much possible that the TMC is able to avoid any electoral mandate against it. This calls for an intervention by the centre and imposition of President’s rule under Article 356 of the Constitution. There is a total failure of constructional machinery in the state and it is imperative that President’s rule is imposed under such circumstances. Such measures are employed sparingly but it is not a dead letter and emergent situations like this call for its imposition.
