Hello Artists,

How did you find our last blog? Well, we looked at most of the basics. We talked about the vanishing point, horizon line and rules of one-point perspective. Let us take things a step further and see what two-point perspective is. Perspective as a whole is a little complicated when you confine your imaginative boundaries.

I hope you find this blog useful in understanding the techniques.

WHAT IS TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE?

EXAMPLE 1

Let us play the ingenious card for a while. Imagine looking at a building from one corner or an angle. You will to able to see that two sets of parallel lines are moving away. In fact, one side recedes toward one vanishing point and so does the other. Thus, there are two vanishing points when you observe a box-shaped object from the corner.

EXAMPLE 2

Imagine standing on a beach. There are endless objects around a beach. At some point, the people on the beach start walking away from you. In fact, they become progressively smaller till they disappear at the horizon line. For two-point perspective, two vanishing points are placed on the horizon line. These points maintain a certain space to avoid distortion.

Also, every set of parallel lines has its own vanishing points.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

The next step is to draw the corner of an object.  Draw a line in between two vanishing points. It can cross over the horizon line. This line represents the corner of a building. Two point perspective is mostly used for drawing buildings or interiors.

In a two-point perspective drawing, the horizontal lines angle the picture plane. Thus, these are foreshortened. Also, they connect to a left vanishing point (LVP) or a right vanishing point (RVP). We draw the vertical lines parallel to the picture plane. In fact, these are the true vertical lines.

Moreover, we can incorporate additional details for unlimited possibilities. Thus, two-point perspective gives a three-dimensional effect to a geometric subject.

WHERE CAN WE USE TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE?

Two-point perspective is relevant for corners of objects are prevalent. On the contrary, three-point perspective is commonly used for extreme views.

You can practice 2-point perspective from the diagram:
