AHMEDABAD/NEW DELHI: A flight from Abu Dhabi and a cargo plane had to abort landing and fly on to Mumbai early on Thursday morning when their pilots spotted a cow running amok near the runway of the Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport in Ahmedabad, according to sources. The arrival of five-odd flights and a few departures were also affected.
The chairman of the
Airports Authority of India (AAI), Guruprasad Mohapatra, confirmed to TOI that “the cow entered through the cargo side, but was controlled soon”.
The AAI has sought a detailed report from the
Ahmedabad airport director. “The chairman has asked the airport director to ascertain the possibility of negligence. Directives have been given to take stringent steps to avoid any such occurrences in future,” an AAI statement said. Airport sources said that the “freak incident” took place around 3am and the CISF, ATC and airport fire staff had to struggle for nearly an hour and a half to remove the cow from the operational area.
A top AAI official said: “Local officials have been directed to coordinate with civic authorities... to lay cattle traps at all possible locations where animals could enter the cargo premises.”
