Congress sidelined in Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray government, say its ministers
MUMBAI: A fortnight after Rahul Gandhi said Congress was only supporting the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra and not running it, Congress ministers in the state cabinet led by state party unit chief Balasaheb Thorat have alleged their party has been “completely sidelined” by CM Uddhav Thackeray in the decision-making process. Thorat said they would soon meet the CM to discuss the matter.
The statement comes just a couple of days after NCP and Congress ministers raised objections in a cabinet meet about state chief secretary Ajoy Mehta’s allegedly unilateral decisions without getting ministerial approvals.
Thorat and energy minister Nitin Raut of Congress told TOI most of the party’s ministers met on Thursday to discuss the political situation and steps taken by the MVA government before and during the coronavirus crisis. “We feel Congress has been completely sidelined in the decision-making process. We will soon call on Thackeray to express our views on the state of affairs in the government,” Thorat said.
A Congress minister said the party’s cabinet members are agitated over the style of functioning of the CM. “All decisions are taken by two persons, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar. They meet several times and take decisions, but in the entire process the Congress is not involved. For Congress ministers, it is difficult to meet the CM. We meet only during the cabinet meeting, and in that too, the CM is on video call, so personal interaction is not possible,” he said.
Besides Thorat and Raut, the meeting was attended by assembly speaker Nana Patole and ministers Varsha Gaikwad, Ashok Chavan and Aslam Shaikh, among others. The meeting had been called to discuss the governor’s nominees to the legislative council. A minister said the formula for the 12 seats has been changed, giving Congress 3 seats, and the idea of 4 seats each for the three parties abandoned.
