MUMBAI: In one of his first infrastructure plans for Mumbai since assuming office, CM Uddhav Thackeray on Friday asked BMC to look at the feasibility of a stilt bridge or elevated road to link Cuffe Parade and Marine Drive, a project that was put in cold storage four decades ago.

Sources say the plan to revive the project, which was halted—reclamation had to be abandoned—during 1970s following protests by fishermen, was suggested by Thackeray’s son and MLA Aaditya. BMC will soon appoint a consultant to study the feasibility of a stilt bridge and elevated road.

Civic officials said this can be a faster option as it would not entail reclamation. When the previous BJP-led government proposed a 300-acre park between Cuffe Parade and Nariman Point by reclaiming land, it faced opposition from the local fishermen.

Damodar Tandel, chief of Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kriti Samity, who is also associated with Sena, said, “We welcome the decision as a stilt bridge will not hamper movement of our boats.”
