2 die as racing buses hit each other, cause pile-up

NEW DELHI: Two employees of Delhi Transport Corporation were killed and a few others injured after a bus rammed another, leading to more accidents and a pile-up, on the Anand Vihar road near Ramprastha Crossing on Monday evening. Two autorickshaws and two motorbikes were also crushed. The drivers of both buses fled from the scene after the incident.

DCP (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said that incident happened on the road number 56 when four buses rammed each other, crushing two autorickshaws and two bikes in-between. The deceased were identified as Rupender Kumar and Satish Kumar. A passenger of an autorickshaw and a motorcycle rider have been admitted to the GTB hospital where they are battling for their lives.

Police say that the pile-up occured when a private chartered bus, allegedly competing with a school bus, rammed it from behind while trying to overtake it from the left side. The school bus, which was returning with children, banged into a UP roadways bus which eventually rammed into a DTC bus. Police said that fortunately, none of the children suffered any injuries.

The two victims were crushed in between the chartered bus and the school bus, while two autorickshaws and a motorcycle were sandwiched between the DTC and the UP roadways bus.

The cops reached the spot and informed the fire department, which cut through the buses using gas cutters to extract the remains of the autorickshaws and the bike. Police said that the impact was such that one of the autorickshaw was found stuck under one of the buses.

A preliminary probe suggests that the chartered bus was driving at a speed of more than 80kmph. Police said some of the other injured have admitted themselves to private hospitals for treatment. The eyewitness accounts of the onlookers are being recorded to establish the sequence of events.

A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered against the drivers of both the buses. The bodies of the two men have been sent for an autopsy.

Locals allege that the stretch remains empty during the day, due to which buses heading towards Ghaziabad tend to speed and race against each other. CCTV footage of cameras in the area is also being scanned.
