Castigating the Narendra Modi-led government over the ongoing feud in the Central Bureau of Investigation, former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Friday stated that the environment in the country’s institutions like CBI is being vitiated. His remarks came hours after Congress President Rahul Gandhi was detained for holding protests against the BJP government over the removal of Alok Verma as CBI Director.
“The environment in our universities and national institutions like the CBI is being vitiated,” he was quoted as saying by PTI, referring to the current crisis in the CBI where the top two bosses of the agency were divested of their powers and sent on leave. Singh was speaking at the launch of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s book “The Paradoxical Prime Minister” in New Delhi.
Singh also launched a tirade on the present dispensation over the recent incidents of cow vigilantism, communal violence and mob lynching. “Modi has spoken of being PM for all Indians but remained silent in the face of communal violence, mob lynching and cow vigilantism,” the former PM said.
Singh also said that in the past 4 years, “Modiji and his govt have failed the electorate and eroded voters’ faith.”
On Thursday, the Congress chief held a press conference and launched a scathing attack on PM Modi for “illegally” removing the CBI Director and claimed that it was a panic reaction over the ongoing investigation in the Rafale fighter jet deal. In a frontal attack on Modi and his government, Gandhi had yesterday said that the removal of Alok Verma as CBI Director was illegal and an insult to the Constitution.

Yesterday, Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha and one of the three members of the committee that appoints the CBI chief, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the government move was “illegal” and “mala fide” as “no one — neither you nor the CVC — enjoys the requisite authority to interfere with the Terms of Service vested in the Director”. Kharge was also present at Rahul Gandhi’s press conference yesterday along with Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
