MUMBAI: A 35-year-old man, who was wanted by the Punjab police for his alleged role in a scam pertaining to the Union civil services exam, was arrested in Andheri on Friday. The accused, Mustaq Ahmed, had allegedly taken a total of Rs75 lakh from three candidates, promising to help them clear the exam without even appearing for it, the police said.

Ahmed is the ninth to be held in the Union Public Service Commission exam fraud that was busted on April 4 in Punjab. Absconding since the time the scam was busted, he had been working as a manager with an insurance company in Andheri (east).

In Punjab, he used to conduct lectures for students pre paring for the Union civil services exam. The police said that Ahmed once aspired to join the Indian Administrative Service or the Indian Police Service, but had taken to coaching stu dents for the same exams after his attempts failed.

At least 38 others have been booked in the case for leaking or selling exam papers to candidates by charging each one Rs25 lakh. After the fraud came to light in Punjab, several candidates who cleared the exams have not been issued letters to join service.

The Punjab police, who had been on the lookout for Ahmed, sought help from the Mumbai police after being tipped about his whereabouts in Mumbai. A few officials from Sahar police station said they called up the insurance company where Ah med worked, claiming that they had a parcel for him.

Later, on seeing the policemen in uniform at his office, Ahmed asked them to wait outside. “He then told his seniors that he was leaving and came along,“ said a police official.

Assistant inspector general of police Surjeet Singh of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau told TOI that Ahmed was a middlemen who arranged for candidates. “His interrogation will help nab the kingpin,“ said Singh, adding that a team of three Punjab policemen has got transit remand of Ahmed from the Borivli court.
