BATHINDA: Residents of Baghi Wander village near Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district thrashed a youth to death on Thursday after accusing him of selling drugs. However, police did not recover any drugs from the possession of the accused. Police have registered a case under murder charges against unidentified persons.

Earlier the villagers were deterring police from picking up the youth, identified as Vinod Kumar (26) of Talwandi Sabo, for hours after mercilessly beating him up. It was only when the senior officers reached Baghi Wander that the residents let the police take Vinod to hospital. The victim was rushed to Bathinda civil hospital after suffering multiple injuries besides fractures in his left leg and arm. He was later referred to Guru Gobindh Singh medical college where he succumbed to his injuries in late evening.

The victim before dying had accused Raju Singh, son of Bhagi Wander sarpanch Charanjit Kaur, to have instigated people for assaulting him. Talwandi Sabo police have registered a case of attempt to murder against unidentified persons.

Bhagi Wander residents said they had submitted a complaint with police two days ago saying that Vinod usually visited their village to sell drugs. “He also used to harass the women. No action was taken on our complaint. On Thursday, when he visited the village again, the residents beat him up and handed him over to police,” said a villager.

Vinod had been earlier booked for five cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and was out on bail. He was earlier residing at Bhagi Wander but was forced to move out, following which he started staying in Talwandi Sabo, said the villagers. His father, Vijay Kumar, has been in jail after being booked for drug peddling in the past few months.

When contacted, Talwandi Sabo deputy superintendent of police Barinder Singh said police were trying to ascertain the identity of the persons who assaulted Vinod and also whether he sold drugs.
