Girls were pawed, groped and abused by revellers in Bengaluru's MG Road and Brigade Road during New Year's Eve celebrations.

The city had apparently made elaborate security arrangement and over 1,500 policemen were deployed in the area but that did not stop drunken revellers from molesting and accosting women who were leaving the pubs.

Thousands of people assemble in the Central Business District or the CBD to welcome the new year and the police put in measures to allow them to have fun in a peaceful manner. However, this year the New Year's Eve turned out to be horrific for women.

The police, this year, allowed people to party on the roads till 1:30 AM and pubs and hotels were open till 2 AM. When women were leaving the pubs they were met with drunken revelers who tried to molest and accost them.

The situation got unruly on Bridage Road and police had no other option but to resort to a lathi charge to get things under control.

Many women ran towards police seeking protection from drunken men who tried to molest them. Despite women going through a horrid time, no cases of molestation have been registered with the Bengaluru police as of now.

Nearly 60 CCTV cameras were installed and police, despite being prepared, were outnumbered. 1,500 policemen were insufficient to manage thousands of people who came to ring in the new yea on Brigade Road.

Despite years of experience of unruly crowds being present and creating nuisance, especially for women, the police seemed to have overlooked all this.

Senior police officials who spoke to India Today said they had taken proper measures but the situation turned out to be a damp squib.
