India become first team to clinch four Under-19 World Cup title

INDIA ARE UNDER-19 WORLD CHAMPIONS

It's all over! India are Under-19 World Cup champions for the fourth time! They gone one better than the Ishan Kishan-led side in 2016 to become only side with four titles. What a fantastic tournament for Prithvi Shaw's boys! They began by thumping Australia by 100 runs and have sealed it with another comprehensive win over the same opposition. The final is down to an all-round bowling effort that was started by Ishan Porel and Kamlesh Nagarkoti and wrapped up by Anukul Roy and Shiva Singh.

Chasing 216, India were always the favourites but ensured the sense of the big occasion didn't get to them. Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill were both impressive in their starts but Kalra took his game to a whole new level. He didn't let Australia make most of the rare breakthroughs they managed and showed great temperament to carry his bat. Rahul Dravid must also get a lot of credit for being a great sounding board for the young minds.

Century for Manjot Kalra!

Take a bow, Manjot! Supremely fine effort on such a massive platform from the opening batsman. He watched two of India's best batsmen fall after making bright starts but didn't let the pressure consume him.

India 170/2 in 30 overs

Manjot Kalra has kept the Indian juggernaut rolling. Australia were pumped after dismissing Shubman Gill in the 22nd over, but that's how far they've got since. Kalra scored a half-century, and kept going at over a run-a-ball. You could argue the footwork has been a bit amiss, but that has hardly hampered the left-hander. He's on his way to a century, and India are well on their way to their fourth Under-19 World Cup title.

WICKET

Oh, and a big one! Shubman Gill has been sent packing. He advanced down the track to Param Uppal but never going to get to the pitch of the ball. He was looking to drive against the turn, towards the leg side, but didn't reach it. The ball pitched outside off and turned in to rattle the stumps. Game changer? Or too late now? IND 131/2 in 21.2 overs.

India 125/1 in 20 overs

Shubman Gill arrived and began to play some exquisite strokes through cover against the pacers, and making use of his strong bottom-hand play against the spinners a la Virat Kohli. Manjot Kalra too has taken his risks, gone big several times and has scored his second half-century of the tournament - both coming against Australia. The pair has added 50 runs already and don't look like they're going to throw it away from here. India have already polished off more than half the target, and still have nine wickets in hand. Should be a cruise from here, unless Australia can actually force their way through.

WICKET

Will Sutherland has got the breakthrough! It's the wicket of the Indian captain Prithvi Shaw. Shaw played inside the line of the ball delivered from around the stumps that just went on straight and hit the off-stump. India 71 for 1 in 11.4 overs

India - 55/0 in 10 overs

Steady stuff from India so far. No urgency, no ambitious strokes. Just ticking along nicely at the moment. Aussie pacer Zak Evans made a good start with the ball, and constantly lured Prithvi Shaw to play away from his body. The Indian captain was lucky not to nick any of the several balls that he tried to drive expansively. Rain halted the play for a short while once and is threatening to do it again, which should alter India's plans here a bit. The target is low so staying ahead of par on the D/L method shouldn't be hard. Australia need to bowl 20 overs for D/L to count, else the games goes to the reserve day.

Play about to resume!

The lights are partially on and there's no rain anymore. Australia are on the field and in their huddle, while the Indian openers make their way out for the second time. India are 196 runs away from World Cup glory, while Australia need wickets. All of them before those 196 runs are hit. Fascinating chase coming up!

Rain stops play!

Just four overs into India's chase, rain has forced players off the field. Australia bowlers have been tidy so far, even luring Prithvi Shaw to chase balls outside the off-stump. They've succeeded in luring him out, but yet induce an edge. Ian Bishop on air reckoned the keeper and the slip fielders must be salivating looking at the way the Indian captain was playing away from his body. He has survived so far but Australia will be chuffed with the way they've begun. At the rain break, India are 23 for 0 in 4 overs.

Innings break - Australia 216 in 47.2 overs

That's the end of the Australian innings! Excellent bowling performance from India, as they kept getting stuck into the batting line-up and denying them big partnerships. There was one between Merlo and Uppal but once that was broken, Australia found it very tough to build another. Merlo departed for a crucial 76, but that may yet end up on the losing side as Australia could muster up on 216.

Australia's downward slide!

Another wicket and Australia are nine down! A superb throw from deep square leg from Shiva Singh has caught Baxter Holt short of his crease. Australia have gone from 183 for 4 to 216 for 9, with Shiva Singh's involvement in four out of those five scalps.

Eight down!

Nagarkoti sees a tailender and fires in a full ball at over 140ks! Zak Evans is cleaned up!

MASSIVE BREAKTHROUGH!

And Jonathan Merlo is gone! With only five overs remaining, Merlo had to go after the bowling. And he did just that, while attempting a reverse hit off Anukul Roy, but found elevation and not the distance on his shot. Shivam Singh settled under the ball and took it well at sweeper cover. Australia 212 for 7 in 45.3 overs

WICKET!

Shiva Singh has struck again! Merlo can only look on helplessly from the other end as Will Sutherland falls cheaply. Shiva went wide off the crease and unfurled an armball, which Will Sutherland clearly didn't expect. He looked to drive it away and got a faint inside edge which was exceptionally taken by Harvik Desai behind the stumps. AUS 191/6 in 41.3 overs.

Australia - 185 for 5 in 40 overs

Once again India break a partnership just when it was brewing. Nathan McSweeney arrived at the fall of Param Uppal and got going straightaway. He was looking good to give Merlo the much-needed company to drive the team total forward, but a soft-dismissal ended this partnership prematurely too. Shiva Singh tossed one up and, like Uppal, McSweeney too went early into his attempt at guiding the ball away on the leg side. Leading edge went straight to Shiva. Can Australia push their total to 250?

Australia - 142/4 in 30 overs

Jonathan Merlo is the absolute key for Australia here! He's scored a fine half-century in a game where the top-order has struggled. He came into the fixture at the back of a match-winning four-wicket haul. The all-rounder has dealt extremely well with the troika of left-arm spinners, throwing them off rhythm by constantly shuffling across and playing the sweep shot.

WICKET!

Anukul Roy has struck! Param Uppal is caught and bowled after a leading edge ballooned back to the bowler. Smart variation in pace from Roy, as he alternated between loopy balls and flatter ones. Uppal was back in his crease and looking to work it down the leg side but went early, resulting in an edge. Australia 134/4 in 28.5 overs.

Australia - 94/3 in 20 overs

Jonathan Merlo and Param Uppal halted the rut after Australia were well and truly rocked, courtesy Sangha's early exit. They've batted well against the Indian spinners so far, and how they carry on doing that will be key to how much they can post here.

Australia in trouble - Jason Sangha departs

And Nagarkoti is quite pumped about it! Back of a length ball that was angled into the right hander before straightening a bit. Sangha had to fend at it and ended up nicking the ball. Harvik Desai took an acrobatic, diving catch to leave Australia down to 59 for 3.

Australia - 52/2 in 10 overs

Inspired stuff from Ishan Porel so far! He snuffed out Max Bryant just when Australia were starting to get an early grip on the proceedings. He then struck in the last ball of the 10th over, taking out an even more set batter - Jack Edwards. Edwards - who'd scored 73 against India in the group-stage fixture - already had five fours to his name - when a short of a length ball from Porel kicked up a bit on him. He pushed at it off the backfoot but could only find the Kamlesh Nagarkoti at cover.

WICKET!

Max Bryant has to depart after a breezy start. He has hit a length ball straight to Abhishek Sharma at cover. Bryant went with hard hands the moment he saw some width but can't keep it down, or away from the grasp of Sharma, who dives to his right and completes a sharp take. Australia 32 for 1 in 5.1 overs.

We're not very far away from the start of the game. Here's what Harsha Bhogle had to say about the India Under-19 side.

Australia have won the toss and opted to bat first in overcast conditions. India's pace attack will not mind that, one bit!

Steve Smith has a message for the colts

Fans have thronged the final venue..

Prelude - Who can make it a fourth title?

It's here then! The grand finale of another Under-19 World Cup. An unbeaten Indian side - who've hardly faced a challenge so far - go up against an Australian outfit that has gotten progressively better. What more can you ask for from a title clash?

Both teams have three titles each, and have met in the final once before! In that game, India captain Unmukt Chand scored a match-winning hundred in a run-chase. No pressure then, Prithvi!

Australia don't have a squeaky clean record like India's at the tournament. In fact they don't even have a single batsman in the top-10 on the batting charts, but that's hardly been a problem. They've put in more collected efforts to ride their way to the summit clash. Another such show in the offing? Well, Jason Sangha will surely hope for it.
