Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Saturday morning with the regional Meteorological Centre in Colaba predicting the situation to improve in the next 24 hours. The city received 298 mm of rainfall over a period of 9 hours on Tuesday making it the worst rainfall in the region since 2005 when Maximum City went down under after an unprecedented deluge. The rain had slowed down the city’s vehicular traffic on Tuesday and hundreds were stranded without a way to reach back home in the suburbs. Most of the railway tracks were also waterlogged and local trains, the lifeline of the city, were also affected. However, situation has improved on Wednesday. Buses and trains have mostly resumed service.
On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government had issued an advisory: “The next 48 hours may see very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and suburbs… Precautionary measures include not venturing out unless necessary, electricity supply may be cut down to waterlogging, it would be advisable to keep devices charged, stock food and supplies, roll down windows of vehicles while in traffic…”
1.20 pm: Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu said on Wednesday that all efforts were being taken to provide relief to passengers of Mumbai suburban in wake of heavy rains. Additional pumps have also been put in for bringing water levels down in heavy water logged areas. “By all these efforts, services on @WesternRly was resumed yesterday at 23.58 hours and stranded passengers evacuated.”
12.55 pm: Five teams of 5 BN, NDRF will be prepositioned in Mumbai now for recce, confidence building and as a precautionary measure. There will be one team each in Andheri, Kurla-Sion-Ghatkopar axis, Matunga, Dadar – Hind mata axis, and in Lower Parel – curry road axis. The teams have boats, lifebuoy, lifejackets and deep diving sets to help people during any situation.

12.10 pm: Rumours of a metro bridge collapse in Andheri’s Chakala area have been doing rounds since this morning. The Indian Express reporters on the ground have confirmed that its fake. Please refrain from spreading rumours.
12.05 pm: After rains receded this morning between 8.30 am to 11.30 am, Santacruz recorded 6 mm rainfall and Colaba also recorded 6 mm. This is a huge drop from the figures during the 24-hour frame between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. 331.4 mm and 111 mm rainfall was recorded at Santacruz and Colaba respectively.
11.50 am: Will it rain in Mumbai today?
There have been light showers in eastern and western suburbs. Heavy rains remain unlikely. IMD said earlier today that the monsoon clouds had moved north so heavy rains were unlikely on Wednesday. South Gujarat and other areas may experience heavy rains. North Konkan region, including Mumbai, may experience light rain.
11.30 am: Shiv Sena, which rules the BMC, complimented the civic body for ensuring that the situation did not “go out of hand”. “The BMC’s preparedness to tackle the natural calamity ensured that the situation did not go out of hand. The civic body should be complimented for this. Even after heavy rains, no big untoward incident has taken place,” Shiv Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.
11.15 am: Though there is no waterlogging in the area, some traffic obstacles can be found in Sion, Matunga Area due to few vehicles left on the road. Waterlogging all over is clear. Traffic has also been restored to normal.
11.10 am: Gastroenterologist, Dr Deepak Amrapurkar, 59, has been missing since 6.45 pm on Tuesday. The senior doctor was last spotted as he was returning home from Bombay Hospital. “He asked driver to take car home and decided to walk since he thought it will take less time. Our house is 10 minutes away from where he was,” said Pallavi Godbole, his niece. After finding his umbrella near India Bulls, Lower Parel, the family suspects he may have fallen in a manhole. 11.05 am: A group of nurses that had come to the city from Dhule for a morcha at Azad Maidaan in south Mumbai were stranded after train services were shut yesterday due to rains and accident at Asangaon. They got required assistance after dialing 100.
11.00 am: Meanwhile, reports of mishaps across the city have been pouring in. ANI reported that a tree fell on a mini bus in Mumbai’s Dadar West and no one was injured in the accident. In a separate incident, a man died after falling into an open manhole on Dadar’s Matkar Road. Police register case on account of eyewitness, according to ANI.
10.50 am: Kurla residents allege there has been no help from administration in the aftermath of the heavy rains on Tuesday. Visuals provided by ANI show the residents clearing their house of the rain water using buckets and other containers.
10.40 am: Mumbai’s famous dabbawalas won’t be operating today. “The over 5,000 ‘dabbawalas’ who deliver around two lakh ‘dabbas’ (tiffins) a day won’t be able to do so today as they returned only this morning after being stranded at railway stations,” the spokesperson for Mumbai Dabbawala Association, Subhash Talekar, told PTI. “Also all educational institutions and many offices are closed today.”
10.30 am: Police said that four people were washed away in four in separate incidents in Mumbai following torrential rains, reported PTI. The incidents were reported from Dahisar, Kandivali, Maladand Dadar areas, a senior police official told PTI.
10.20 am: Maharashtra and Gujarat have now been put on high alert. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Konkan received 500 per cent excess rainfall on Tuesday, recording 99 mm of rainfall when its normal for the day is only 16.5 mm.

10.10 am: The Western Naval Command has also made arrangements to provide shelter to the people who were stranded. “WNC has made arrangements to provide shelter to stranded Mumbaikars at Colaba, Worli and Ghatkopar,” the spokesperson said adding that the shelters were provided at Sagar Institute Colaba, INS Trata Worli, INS Hamla Marve and Material Organisation Ghatkopar.
10.00 am: All Air India flights from Mumbai delayed since morning due to rains and also crew constraints owing to waterlogging at many areas. There have been around 30 minute delays. Flights of yesterday – Muscat AI 985 and AI 342 Singapore being operated today at 11.30 am and 2.30 pm.
9.52 am: In the last 24 hours Santacruz recorded 331.4 mm and Colaba recorded 111 mm rainfall.
9.35 am: Navy helicopters have been put on standby to meet any eventuality. The NDRF too has been put on alert.
9.25 am: The heavy rainfall now seems to have delayed the talks on Australia-India investment and education ties. The Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism, and Investment Steven Ciobo, who was scheduled to visit the BSE and the BSE Institute in Mumbai on Thursday, has cancelled his visit due to the “inclement weather conditions” in Mumbai.
9.20 am: The State Disaster Management Authority also said there is likely to be less rainfall today. “The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall for today. However, it is likely to be lesser compared to yesterday,” a senior SDMA official told PTI. “Also, there is much lesser congestion expected as the government has already announced that schools and offices will remain shut today,” he added.
9.10 am: The mishaps took place as Mumbai received 298 mm of rainfall over a period of 9 hours on Tuesday which is nine times more rain than the average.
9.05 am: While most of the people were stranded, the heavy rainfall claimed three lives in the Maximum City in two separate incidents of house collapse. The first incident took place in Varshanagar in Park Site on Tuesday followed by another in Suryanagar in Vikhroli at around 2 am on Wednesday morning. Two out of the three dead were children.
9.00 am: Schools and colleges remained shut on Wednesday. Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis advised people to stay back home unless there is an emergency. “However, the essential services and critical staff in the government will be on duty today,” the Maharashtra CM said.
8.55 am: “Mumbai is not going to see rains for few hours as the monsoon clouds have moved towards north,” says IMD Deputy Director General KS Hosalikar. “South Gujarat and other areas may experience heavy rains. In afternoon North Konkan region including Mumbai may experience light rain,” he added.
8.50 am: There is no rainfall in the Dharavi area as of now. However there is severe waterlogging in the Mulund area following heavy rain.
8.45 am: Jet Airways, Vistara and IndiGo has offered its passengers to cancel or reschedule their August 30 flights without any penalty or cancellation fee.

6.55 am: Mumbai is just the latest in a long list of cities that have experienced flooding this year. A couple of weeks ago, Bengaluru had received massive rains, about 180 mm in a single day, and was faced with similar flooding. Large parts of Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha also experienced floods this season. 11:01 pm: A 32 year-old woman and a teenage girl died in rain-related incidents in Thane, news agency PTI reported.
10.25 pm: The Indian Navy has put up four rain shelters for Mumbaikars stranded away from their homes due to incessant rains and water logging in the city over the last 36 hours. This is in addition to almost 1700 Defence Civilians, including ladies, being accommodated with the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and 400 civilian employees being accommodated at Anger and Noorbhoy building.
One shelter is located at the Sailors’ Institute ‘Sagar’ at Cooperage which is close to Churchgate station as well as Colaba and Nariman Point areas. The other three shelters are located at the naval base INS Trata at Worli, the naval base INS Hamla at Marve near Malad and the Material Organisation campus at Ghatkopar.

3.00 pm: KS Hosalikar, deputy director general (western region) of India Meteorological Department, has said that the situation is not similar to July 26, 2005. “It’s not a 26 July 2005 like situation as clouds over Mumbai are not that thick as these were then in 2005, but yes heavy rains are in forecast. So warnings are issued to State and BMC disaster management units,” he said.

2.35 pm: Gandhi Market, one of the arterial roads connecting Central suburbs to South Mumbai, is inundated with water.
2.30 pm: According to news agency ANI, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that Mumbai and suburban areas have received more than 70 mm of rainfall in the past one hour and more than 100 mm rain since 8.30 am today.
2.25 pm: There is no respite from the rain and people continue to be stalled at various parts of the city.
2.20 pm: Ministry of Railways informed that due to heavy rainfall and water logging on tracks and point failure at Bandra, three lines except UP Fast Line have been affected. “Efforts are on to start traffic on 3 lines (except UP fast line) at Bandra as soon as possible by attending the points,” the Ministry tweeted.
2.15 pm: Priyanka Bansal, a chartered accountant, took over an hour to travel to her office on western express highway from her home in Amboli, Andheri, in contrast to a usual time span of ten minutes. “The Andheri subway is filled with water and a lot of cars and autos got stuck in water. Engines of a lot of vehicles shut down. I have been in auto under Andheri metro bridge for half an hour. The traffic is not even inching ahead,” she said.
2.10 pm: KS Hosalikar, deputy director general (western region) of India Meteorological Department, said, “The circulation of low pressure area from south west Madhya Pradesh moving westward is likely to intensify into depression and that is likely to give heavy rainfall in Madhya Maharashtra.”

12.45 pm: Up and down locals on the main line in Central Railway (CR) have been stranded at Parel for the past half an hour due to water logging between Kurla and Parel railway stations. There are heavy crowds at both the stations.
12.35 pm: Given the situation of the roads and the difficulty in commuting, several companies have asked their employees to work from home. Everymedia, a Jogeshwari West based company, has told their employees to work from the comfort of their own houses. Few others are calling it a half day.
12.25 pm: There’s a 15 to 20 minutes delay in the arrival and departure of flights from Mumbai airport. Till now, five flights have had to go around and two have been diverted.

12.05 pm: As per an alert issued by Head of Bhivpuri and Khopoli Hydro Power Station, the Walwhan Lake situated in Lonavla is overflowing and had reached a level of 633.79 Mtr by 8 am on August 27. The full supply level of the lake is 635.20 Mtr. “As this area is experiencing heavy rainfall since past few days, it is to inform you that this dam is likely to over flow if the situation continues,” the advisory said.

11.30 am: Mumbai Police have issued a traffic advisory for those travelling on these routes. Due to heavy rainfall, southbound traffic is moving slowly along the Eastern Freeway. Traffic is also slow on Dr B R Ambedkar road, the Western Express Highway, Kherwadi. Avoid these routes if you are in a hurry!
