Cecily Strong To Join Jessica Chastain In Searching For Their ‘Plus One’ – Cannes

Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong is attached to star in Plus One opposite Jessica Chastain. The comedy follows a single woman (Chastain) who realizes she has limited choices in girlfriends who can join her on the singles scene because all of her close friends are married or about to be. She finds an unlikely wingman — or should that be wingwoman? — in Strong’s loud, sexually uninhibited live wire.

April Prosser has written the script with Patrick Brice (The Overnight) directing. Gloria Sanchez Productions, which is dedicated to women-led film and TV projects, is producing. The project is not yet set up but has a number of companies circling. Don’t be surprised if a deal for this goes down by the time the Cannes market is over, particularly given the success of femme-oriented comedies, buoyed by the likes of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy. Evidence of that trend can be seen in the Paul Feig-directed reboot of Ghostbusters, in which Strong acts alongside McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

Chastain is on a roll. She is set to star in Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut Molly’s Game opposite Idris Elba. Earlier this year, she launched her own production banner Freckle Films, with backing from Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray’s Maven Pictures. The two companies already have optioned two books: The Magician’s Lie by Greer Macallister and Camille Pagan’s Life and Other Near-Death Experiences.

Chastain also is set to star in Woman Walks Ahead with Susanna White (Generation Kill) directing, based on the true story of Catherine Weldon, a widowed Brooklyn artist who, in June 1889, traveled to the Standing Rock Reservation in Dakota Territory to help Sitting Bull hold onto land that the government was trying to wrest from his people.

She most recently was seen alongside Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt in The Huntsman: Winter’s War for Universal.
