Volvo S60 Polestar launched in India at Rs 52.5 lakh (Ex-Delhi)

Volvo S60 Polestar gets a 2L twin-charged engine shedding out 367 hp of power and 470 Nm of torque. Volvo will soon be catering its Polestar models to 47 countries and aims to double its volumes from 750 to 1500 cars.

Coimbatore: Indian arm of Swedish auto maker Volvo Auto India on Friday launched its Volvo S60 Polestar at an introductory price of Rs 52.5 lakh (Ex-Delhi). It’s also the first performance variant by the company in India and like it's other products this will also comes as a completely built unit (CBU).

Company claims that the car can do a 0 - 100km/h sprint in just 4.7 seconds and is limited to a top speed of 250kmh, powered by a specially-enhanced version of Volvo’s award-winning four cylinder Drive-E powertrain.

With the Polestar edition the company has has taken an original S60 and added a bigger turbo, a supercharger, new conrods, new camshafts, a larger air intake and a higher capacity fuel pump to augment the engine. It also gets BorgWarner four-wheel drive system mated to an eight-speed geartronic automatic gearbox.

Polestar has reduced the Volvo S60’s weight by 24kgs lighter over the front axle and 20kgs lighter in total compared to the previous model years.

Talking about the introduction of the new performance variant Tom von Bonsdorff, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India said “This car is remarkably quick, but it is more than that. It combines Polestar’s 20 years racing pedigree with Volvo’s inherent pragmatism and engineering heritage. It is a racing car that you can use every day of the year, be it track or city roads.”

The first ever road legal Polestar cars were launched in 2014 to limited markets. Volvo will soon be catering its Polestar models to 47 markets (up from 13) and doubling volumes from 750 to 1500 cars. India being a growth market promises to be an important step in achieving the targets.

”While used vastly in different areas, this car shares more than just technology as compared to the track car. The core philosophy is the same, developed by people with the same passion. It is about creating performance that can be used in all situations, no matter if it’s about winning a championship or being able to enjoy a safe, functional and fun-to-drive car all year.”- Tom von Bonsdorff added.

Volvo S60 Polestar features a Drive-E engine; and the two-litre, twin-charged engine of the Volvo S60 Polestar produces 367 horsepower and 470 Nm. Company claims that the it has worked on optimizing weight distribution and torque vectoring to improve handling when compared to the previous model.

”All changes made to the car are about improving drivability and efficiency. The base of the new engine carries motorsport technology with solutions like the combination of turbo and supercharger, lightweight materials and more. This works hand-in-hand with our core philosophy and has enabled us to evolve the Volvo S60 Polestar.” said- Henrik Fries, Vice President R&D, Polestar.

Other new features on the Volvo S60 Polestar include a new 20” lightweight rim, Polestar calibrated electro-assisted power steering and a new slotted Brembo 6 piston caliper brake disc 371mm.

Like the Volvo XC 90 T8 hybrid variant, the Volvo S60 Polestar is also equipped with Radar based safety features. The recent delicensing of certain frequencies of radar enables Volvo Auto India to introduce its radar based safety features in India. The S60 Polestar is equipped with radar and with inputs from camera it activates an array of pre-emptive safety functions like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, blind sport detection and park pilot assist.

Volvo S90 Polestar has also been awarded 5-star rating by Euro NCAP in crash testing and takes on the likes of BMW M3 and Audi S6 sedan.

Volvo Auto India also confirmed that it has delivered over 850 Volvo XC90 SUVs in India since its launch in 2016 and expects double digit growth in 2017 with a sales target of 2000 vehicles.
