10 towns in the Netherlands to visit other than Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a popular destination in Europe. And many visitors make it their only stop in the Netherlands. However, so many other adorable towns and cities in the Netherlands are worth visiting. Here are my top 10.

Utrecht

Many refer to Utrecht as a mini-Amsterdam, which certainly has all the charm on a smaller scale. The cozy and less hurried feel makes for a more relaxed taste of Dutch city life. Wander along the canals, stop in the many cafes for a pick-me-up, and visit the Railway Museum. And don’t forget to hike to the top of the Dom Tower!

The Hague

Known as a diplomatic center for the European Union, the Hague houses many institutions. However, it’s not a boring government town. Instead, it's the opposite. The charming downtown is full of winding alleys to cool bars and restaurants. It is also surrounded by forested trails that give way to the beach — never far in the Netherlands!

Rotterdam

The Netherlands’ best-kept secret is wonderfully paradoxical Rotterdam. It’s unlike anywhere else in the country upon arrival at the futuristic train station. The city’s historic center was heavily bombed in WWII, so most of it is quite modern — post-1950s and beyond. If you’re looking for a contrast, head to northern Rotterdam, which stayed mostly intact and escaped wartime damage.

Groningen

This adorable university town in the country's north is a breath of fresh air and arguably more bike-friendly than Amsterdam. The young vibe ensures fun is always just around the corner. The large pedestrian zone is full of hip cafes, bars, and local markets. Groningen is also a gastronomic center — a good meal is never far away!

Vlissingen

In the south of the country, in Zeeland province, lies this tranquil little town on the beach. Cycle, walk, or horseback ride along the water or in the nearby forests, swim in the Atlantic and enjoy Dutch beach life. Day trips to other popular towns like Zoutelande, Domburg, and Middleburg are very easy to do!

Oostkapelle

A bit further up the coast in Zeeland is Oostkapelle, a funky beach town with numerous Insta-worthy cafes and restaurants. Most homes in town began as holiday houses for wealthy Dutch families, and now you can rent them out for vacation! And don’t forget to check out the wild trails full of horses nearby.

Maastricht

The Netherlands’ other university town is far southeast near the Belgian and German borders. Its youthful vibe makes for a fun stop and a night on the town. And remember to check out the marketplace, Fort Sint Pieter, and the caves.

Delft

Delft is a cute historic town with fantastic architecture. Best known as the birthplace of artist Johannes Vermeer and Delftware — blue glazed pottery. Today, Delft is a charming town of cobblestones, canals, and beautiful buildings waiting to welcome you.

Giethoorn

Just south of Groningen is this adorably serene Dutch village. The perfect place for a relaxing getaway, you’ll bask in spring flowers and tranquil lanes. The best part is that a large portion of the center is car-free and accessible on foot only. This is the place to go if you’re looking to escape the big city!

Haarlem

Amsterdam’s neighbor feels a world away with far fewer people and less noise. There’s a great WWII museum for history buffs and hofjes — hidden courtyards in houses that are apt for exploring. And don’t forget the iconic windmill museum!
