INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — An IPL phone scam is making the rounds in central Indiana.

Customers have reported receiving calls from a number in which the caller ID says IPL. The caller identifies themselves as an IPL worker and then tells the customer their power will be disconnected.

The supposed IPL employee directs the customer to call the main office at 317-550-5624 where payment arrangements can be made to prevent disconnection.

IPL said a big red flag for customers should be a requirement to pay immediately or within an hour, or they’ll disconnect. A representative for the company also said "we don't ever recommend a specific payment method or type," which can be typical for scammers.

IPL has notified management of the issue and the scam has been reported to police.

If you receive this type of call, hang up immediately and report the scam to IPL.
