INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — There's a scam targeting Indianapolis Power and Light customers.

Customers say that in the last few weeks, they've received calls from someone pretending to work for IPL telling them that if they don't pay, their power will be shut off.

"IPL has received numerous customer reports about a payment scam where customers reported they've been contacted by someone claiming to represent IPL and indicating that their electric service would be disconnected if they did not immediately provide payment information," according to IPL.

Some even said the caller ID shows up as IPL.

A similar scam recently has been happening with Duke customers.

IPL said if a representative calls a customer the rep will have specific information related to that customer's billing and account.

The company also does not require a specific payment type.

Anyone who has received a fake call should report it to IPL at 317-261-8444 and the police.
