Geography

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are an archipelago in the Indian Ocean about 1000 km west of Indonesia. The dwarf state has a total area of only 14 km² (five mi²) and a total coastline of 26 km (16.2 mi). This land area is about 4.2 times the size of NY Central Park. This makes the Cocos Islands the second smallest country in Oceania after Tokelau and the fifth smallest worldwide.

The archipelago consists of 27 islands. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands have no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital West Island is about 16,730 km (10,396 mi).

Climate on the Cocos Islands

On the Cocos Islands, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 28 and 30 degrees. In the colder months, the average night temperatures drop down to 24 °C.
