French Guiana is a country in South America right on the Atlantic Ocean. The land has a total area of 83,534 km² (32,253 mi²) and a total coastline of 378 km (234.9 mi). This land area is approximately 105% of the area of Maine. French Guiana is thus the 21st biggest country in the Americas and in terms of area ranked 117th worldwide. With 3.5 inhabitants per km² it is one of the most sparsely populated countries on earth.French Guiana is comparatively low at an average elevation of 168 meters above sea level. The country has about 10 islands. There are direct national borders with the two neighboring countries Brazil and Suriname. The distance between New York City and the Capital Cayenne is about 4,530 km (2,815 mi).
