Description
Grows in tufts on grasslands, heaths and moors on acidic soil. When the grass is dried it smells like fresh hay with a hint of vanilla. This is one of the grasses that causes hayfever.
Flowers
The flowering spike is somewhat loose in appearance, having numerous hairy spikelets with pinkish/reddish stamens.
Leaves
Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Linear, elongated, 3-5 mm wide.
Fruits Seeds
Caryopsis: a dry fruit containing a grain.
Edible
Tea is made from the fresh or dried leaves.
Medical
The plant contains coumarin which can prevent the blood from coagulating.
