While Rameshwaram is known for its temples and the ghost town of Dhanushkodi, one of the top highlights visitors look forward to would be a train ride on Pamban Bridge, the 100-year-old railway bridge which has become synonymous with the town by now. Going by recent reports, it looks like you might have even more reason to plan another trip to the hood in the near future. Rameshwaram is getting India’s very first vertical lift sea railway bridge! Currently under construction, the bridge is touted to be ready in a couple of years.

Announced by Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways, the vertical sea bridge will be 2.05 km long and will connect the mainland to Pamban Island. The minister's tweet also includes a video which shows what the bridge will look like once completed. While the foundation stone for the structure was laid by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in March 2019, the work began in November. Apart from facilitating trains to run at a higher speed and carry more weight, the bridge will also lead to maximising volume of traffic between the mainland of Pamban and Rameshwaram. Well, we’re going to be following updates quite closely just so we’ll be all ready to pack bags and leave as soon as the bridge is ready!
