The V&A Museum is hosting an exceptional exhibition dedicated to the art of the kimono. From its delicate manufacture to its dressing, thought as a ritual, this Japanese costume is evocative of know-how and tradition. More than just a precious silk garment, it bears witness to a culture and a fashion that has never ceased to inspire the greatest designers from all over the world.
The kimono in all of its forms
The Victoria & Albert Museum is dedicating an exhibition to this traditional Japanese cloakroom garment, the first in Europe. It tells the story of how the kimono has traveled through ages and cultures to be reinterpreted by leading fashion designers, from Paul Poiret to Rei Kawakubo, and explores the ways in which this ancestral garment retains its place in Eastern and Western wardrobes. Japanese kimonos dating from the 17th century will be on display alongside the original piece worn by Alec Guinness for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, and fashion pieces by John Galliano and Yves Saint Laurent.
