Beautiful set of the works of one of the most influential literary figures in Western history, complete in six volumes. Joseph Addison (1672-1719) was a British poet, playwright, essayist, statesman and member of the British Parliament. Most notably he was the founder of The Spectator, an early coffee house newspaper/magazine which became one of the most widely-read publication in the British Empire during and well after its short run from 1711-1712 under Addison's leadership. Consisting of literature, philosophy and politics of the day, one of the principle aims of The Spectator was to increase the access of reading material for, and level the playing field for women. Truly ahead of its time. Bound in contemporary calf, professionally rebacked to period style with raised bands and two red leather spine labels ruled in gilt. Mild rubbing and edge wear to bindings. Interiors exquisite. Scarce. A superior edition.
