Things you must know before traveling to Costa Rica:

Costa Rica is the perfect backpacker destination. It's a safe haven in Central America, with very little crime and outstanding environmental policies.

Due to its small size, it's easy to see the major highlights of the country in only a few weeks. However, don't underestimate the amount of things to do and see in this country. It may be small, but it has plenty to offer.

It is more expensive than the rest of Central America, but it is cheaper than you think. There are many cheap hostels and campsites that can keep your costs low. Other ways to stick to your budget is to eat at at local restaurants, avoid buying tour packages and use public transport.

Costa Ricans are not a punctual bunch of people. Busses are late and tomorrow doesn't really mean tomorrow. Time is not as important as it is in the West so things happen much slower! Embrace the pura vida spirit and try not to get upset.

Whether you go to Costa Rica to surf, hike, party or do yoga, remember to respect the culture and environment. Don't abuse the hospitality of Ticos or endanger the incredible biodiversity of the country.

Get ready to have a life-changing experience. Traveling through Costa is bound to change your outlook on life. You will value nature and people more than ever before. And maybe, just maybe, you'll leave the country as a healthier, kinder and more peaceful person.

My top 5 experiences from this trip is:

1. Watching sea turtles nest on the beach.

2. White-water river rafting on class IV rapids.

3. Seeing La Fortuna Waterfall and bathing in the hot springs nearby.

4. Hiking the Lava Trail in Arenal Volcano National Park.

5. Gliding over the Cloud Forest with the longest zip-line in Central America.

Final thoughts:

Costa Rica is one of my favourite destinations in the world. It's an amazing place to do what you've never done before. Try as many activities as you can. Surf, snorkel and swim in the ocean. Hike to waterfalls. Camp on the beach. Live and embrace each moment because this paradise is made to be explored! Pura Vida.
