The New Year in every culture is celebrated with a lot of joy and excitement. Similarly, Ugadi too holds a lot of importance for the people of Andhra Pradesh Karnataka and Telangana. This is the first day of Chaitra, the month of the Hindu lunar calendar. Therefore, this is the first day of the Hindu New Year for different cultures.

It is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Navreh in Kashmir, Sanvatsar Padwo in Konkan and Sindhi people celebrate this day as Cheti Chand. And the festival is celebrated as Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Ugadi 2023 date and timing

Ugadi will be celebrated on March 22. According to Drik Panchang, the Pratipada Tithi for Gudi Padwa beings at 10:52 PM on the night of March 21 and the Pratipada Tithi will end at 8:20 PM on the night of March 22. The day will also mark the beginning of Chaitra Navratri which is a nine-day-long festival. The nine avatars of Maa Durga are worshipped during Chaitra Navratri and the ninth day is also celebrated as Ram Navami.

Ugadi Importance and Significance

Ugadi is the celebration of the New Year in the south-Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. The word Ugadi means the beginning of a new era; Yug or Ug, means Era and Adi, means a new beginning. It is believed that it was on this day that Lord Brahma created the universe and therefore, it is celebrated as the New Year.

This also marks the beginning of the spring season and the end of winter. People come together with their family, friends and loved ones to mark the festival.
