When Kamal Haasan spoke about his ‘harsh’ marriage with Vani Ganapathy while dating Sarika

Indian superstar Kamala Haasan turned 68 today. On his birthday, the actor announced his 234th film by collaborating with his old director-friend Mani Ratnam. The film is tentatively titled as KH234. Kamal Haasan is considered as one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema. Just like his amazing filmography, his personal life was quite colourful and dramatic at the same time.

For the unversed, Kamal Haasan got married twice. His first wife was classical dancer Vani Ganapathy. They got married in 1978 and after spending 10 years together, the couple got divorced in 1988. During his first marital life, he dated actress Sarika Thakur. To marry Sarika, he divorced his first wife in 1988 and soon tied the knot with the actress in the same year.

Let us tell you, Sarika was reportedly pregnant with Kamal’s child before marrying him. In an interview with Simi Garewal for the show, Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Kamal Haasan opened up about his harsh first marriage and said that he was unhappy with it.

The Indian actor said, “It wasn’t working, at least for me. I won’t lie. It went beyond caring, it became harsh and I wanted to be happy.” Kamal Haasan also confessed that he lost faith in the institution of marriage. He said, “I was fast losing faith in the institution of marriage itself, at that time. I always spoke of it loudly, to the shock of people. I said it on the first day I got married that I didn’t want to.”

Kamal Haasan also admitted that the process of getting separated from his first wife Vani Ganapathy was very “painful”. He said that Sarika is a very attractive woman, and they got closer to each other.

Sadly, Kamal Haasan and Sarika too got divorced in 2004, and the couple has two daughters Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan. After his split with Sarika, he was in a relationship with Gautami Tadimalla from 2004 to 2016.

Talking about his latest work, his last film Vikram was a big hit at the box office. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, it also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil in key roles.
