July and August are not recommended due to the monsoon season, which can lead to bad roads and rain. October is the worst time to visit due to unpredictable weather. The lake is accessible only during the summer months, and the water gets frozen during the winter, cutting off the place from the rest of the world. As of my knowledge cutoff in January 2022, a permit is required for international tourists to visit Chandratal. Locals can visit without the permit. Visitors need to obtain the Inner Line Permit (ILP) from the district administration in Himachal Pradesh, particularly for the Spiti Valley. The e-pass can be obtained free of cost by adopting a simple procedure to apply online for it on the website www.eaagman.hp.gov.in. However, there is no permit required while traveling from Chandratal unless you are traveling from the Manali side where you need a pass for Rohtang. If you are traveling from Lahaul and Spiti by vehicle, you are required to have an e-permit for the Atal Tunnel Rohtang-Koksar. • Losar: About 33 kilometers from the lake, Losar has a few guesthouses where visitors can stay.
• Batal: Approximately 16 kilometers from Chandratal Lake, Batal has a few more campsites and a famous Chacha Chai Dhaba where visitors may get a bed for the night for a few hundred rupees.
