Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu recently opened up about her journey as a parent and the harrowing time she had when she was informed that her daughter Devi Basu Singh Grover was diagnosed with a heart condition called ventricular septal defect (VSD). Basu and her spouse Karan Singh Grover, who got married in 2016, welcomed their daughter in November.
Speaking to fellow actor Neha Dhupia during an Instagram Live, Basu revealed that their journey as parents was different from normal people. "It has been a lot tougher than the smile that I have on my face right now," she said, adding that she would not wish that to happen to any mother.
"I got to know on the third day of having a baby that our baby is born with two holes in her heart. I thought I' will not share this, but I am sharing this because I feel that there are a lot of mothers, who helped me in this journey, and it was very difficult to find those mothers,” the actor said.
She said they did not discuss her daughter's condition with their families. "We (Basu and her husband) didn't even understand what a VSD is. We went through a crazy period. We didn't discuss this with our family, we both were in a little bit of a blur. We wanted to celebrate but we were a little numb."
The Ajnabee actor said the first five months were difficult for them, but their daughter was "fabulous from day one."
"We were told that every month, we have to do a scan to know if it is healing on its own. But with the kind of large hole that she had, we were told that it was doubtful, you will have to go through surgery. And the surgery is best done when the child is three-months-old.”
She said they did all the research they could, met with surgeons, went to hospitals, and by the third month, she was ready. "I knew that she had to be okay and I knew that she will be okay. And she is okay now. But the tough decision was to get your child operated at the right place and at the right time.”
The actor said the child was in surgery for six hours. She said she didn't sleep for 40 days and 40 nights.
She said her daughter is fine now.
Basu was last seen in MX Player crime series Dangerous which was released in 2020.
