Rohan Bopanna's fairytale run at the US Open 2023 fell short of a perfect ending. The 43-year-old and Australia's Matthew Ebden went down 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to third seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

This was the third straight US Open men's doubles title for Ram and Salisbury.

Bopanna was bidding to become the oldest men's doubles Grand Slam champion. He was playing in the US Open summit clash 13 years after he made he his first and only final in New York.

On Friday, the Indo-Australian pair defeated Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hughes Herbert 7-6, 6-2 in the semi-finals.

In the process, Bopanna became the oldest man in the Open Era (after 1968) to make it to a Grand Slam final breaking the record previously held by Daniel Nestor.

While the Indian is aged 43 years and 6 months, Nestor was aged 43 years four months.

This is the best finish for Bopanna-Ebden in Grand Slams. The duo reached the semifinals at Wimbledon earlier this year.

How did Rohan Bopanna perform in mixed doubles?

Bopanna had teamed up with Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi in mixed doubles.

They bowed out of the event after losing to the American team of Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend 2-6, 5-7 in the second round.

Rohan Bopanna made his men's doubles debut at the US Open in 2008.

His best result remains the runners-up finish in 2010. Bopanna teamed up with Pakistan's Aisam Qureshi that year and the duo, going by the nickname 'Indo-Pak Express' quickly became the talk of New York town.

They went down in two tiebreak sets to American twins Mike and Bob Bryan in the final.

Bopanna has struck an effective partnership with Australian doubles specialist Matthew Ebden.

The duo has won two titles this year, including Bopanna's maiden Indian Wells Masters championships. They also made the finals at the Madrid Masters and Rotterdam Open.
