Notes

EZ’s instructions are nice but if you need row-by-row instructions, I wrote them down and here they are. I have omitted the Gull Stitch Pattern from the instructions because I am assuming that you have the Knitter’s Almanac by EZ.

Finished Size: 9.5 inches from the neck to the sweater edge. I believe this will fit a baby 9 – 12 months in age but as EZ says “ …babies come in various sizes.”

Yarn: Art Yarns Supermerino #213 – 2 skeins (approximately 321 yards total)

Needles: US 7 24” Circular knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge); 2 stitch holders; Tapestry Needle

Gauge: 4.5 sts = 1 inch in garter stitch

Directions
Cast on 50 stitches. Slip the first stitch of every row, as if to purl. This forms a very neat edge for the button band.
Rows 1-3: Knit
Row 4: (Buttonhole Row) K2, YO, K2tog, Knit the rest of the row.
Rows 5-8: Knit
Row 9: (Inc. Row) K4, K2, M1, Repeat from to last for stitches. K4 (71 stitches)
Rows 10 – 16: Knit
Row 17: Repeat Row 9 (102 stitches)
Rows 18 – 19: Knit
Row 20: Repeat Row 4
Rows 21 – 24: Knit
Row 25: Repeat Row 9 omitting 1 increase (148 stitches)
Row 26: Knit
Row 27 - 35: K4 Work Gull pattern until the last 4 stitches K4
Row 36: (Buttonhole Row) K2, YO, K2tog Work Gull pattern until the last 4 stitches K4

Separating the sleeves from the body:
Row 39: Work 53 stitches. Cast on 7 stitches. Turn.
Row 40: Work 35 stitches in purl and cast on 7 stitches. These 42 stitches now constitute the right sleeve. Put the remaining stitches on two stitch holders or circular needles. You will be working on the right sleeve next.

Slipping the first stitch gives the really neat edge on the button band.

Right Sleeve
Work the Gull Pattern for the next 4 inches. I knitted 7 repeats of the pattern to get the 4 inches or so – you want to end with Row 4 of the pattern stitch. Knit 12 rows and cast off on the wrong side. Break the yarn.

Left Sleeve
Join the yarn to the beginning of the back stitches (the remaining 95 stitches). Work the 70 stitches and then cast on 7 stitches. Turn. Work 5 stitches and cast on 7 stitches. These 42 stitches are now the beginning of the left sleeve. Follow the instructions for the Right Sleeve.

Join the yarn and knit the last 25 stitches. Turn. You should be on the wrong side. Purl the 25 stitches, cast on 14 stitches, purl the 42 stitches for the back. Cast on 14 stitches, purl the last 25 stitches. This is the end of Row 41.
Row 42 – 67: K4 Work Gull pattern until the last 4 stitches K4
Row 68: (Buttonhole Row) K2, YO, K2tog Work Gull pattern until the last 4 stitches K4
Rows 69 – 78: K4 Work Gull pattern until the last 4 stitches K4
This should form 9 repeats from the edge of the armhole or 5 inches. You can continue until the desired length.
Row 79: K8, K2tog Repeat until the end of the row.
Rows 80 – 83: Knit
Row 84: (Buttonhole Row) K2, YO, K2tog, Knit the rest of the row.
Rows 85 – 87: Knit

Cast off loosely on the right side in purl. Sew the sleeves and the armholes. Weave in all loose ends. Sew on the buttons. And you are ready for the baby!!
