The festival of Onam is regarded as the Kerala Harvest festival as per the Malayalam Calendar . It marks the festive time of the state and people indulge in a lot of fun filled activities like Vallam Kali (the snake boat race), Pulikai (traditional dance in tiger costumes), Pookkalam (arrangement of fresh flowers in a design), Kummati Kali (traditional masked dance form) and many other types of entertainment.
The traditional Onam Sadhya is prepared with joy and enjoyed on banana leaves. Both men and women wear their traditional wear and celebrate the festive season with a lot of pomp. As per mythology, though this is a harvest festival, Keralites believe that there was a King Mahabali and that he loved his people a lot. So, he returns every year to visit people on Thiruvonam. That is the how the tradition of preparing Pookkalam, and alsothe preparation of a grand feast called Onam Sadhya came into being.
